Check your online status in the quick menu. Press the PS button, go to your profile, and make sure 'Online Status' isn't set to 'Appear Offline.'

Maybe your console set you to appear offline by default? Just change your status in the profile menu.

I had this issue. I fixed it by logging out of PSN and then logging back in. Worked like a charm!

This happens if your internet connection is flaky or your PSN is down. Verify your internet and check PlayStation Network status.
