Actually, they're not that bad if you manually control them. Set up your defensive positions smartly and take control when needed.
They might seem bad because their AI isn’t great and they struggle to hit agile fighters. Also, bomber positioning and altitude can make it hard for gunners to get a good shot.
Hot take: Bombers are for bombing. If you're depending on your gunners for survival, you're playing them wrong.
