Because the game hates you. Just kidding鈥攊t's usually a sign you need to upgrade your gear or find a better strategy!
I noticed red damage values when I used the wrong ammo or attacked higher-level enemies. Switch things up and you should see a difference!
Red damage values mean your attacks are less effective. Maybe your weapon is weaker against that enemy or your character's skills aren't high enough.
