It's basically the game's way of saying 'hey, you're not doing much damage!' Maybe try a different weapon or adjust your tactics.

I noticed red damage values when I used the wrong ammo or attacked higher-level enemies. Switch things up and you should see a difference!

Red damage values mean your attacks are less effective. Maybe your weapon is weaker against that enemy or your character's skills aren't high enough.
