First, make sure you've actually saved your custom people. Sometimes it's just a simple oversight!

Have you tried restarting the app? Sometimes a quick reboot can fix these small bugs.

For me, updating the app solved this issue. Make sure you have the latest version of BitLife.

Check if you're logged into the correct account. Custom people might be saved under another profile.
