Sometimes it's a glitch. Restart the game and check again. If it's still not working, Epic Games might be rolling out an update.

Spectating in Fortnite is only allowed in certain situations, like after being eliminated in a match. If you start a match late or join mid-game, you can't spectate.

You can only spectate friends if they're already in a game and you join their party before they start the match. Otherwise, no dice!
