My friend, I had the same problem until I realized that Ultimate's combo system is all about precision. Try different move sequences and see what sticks!
Combos are totally possible in Smash Ultimate! It might be that your timing's off or you're not using the right moves for your character. Keep practicing and you'll get it!

Maybe you're playing against opponents who know how to DI (Directional Influence) well. Try to anticipate their moves and adjust your combo strings accordingly.
