Honestly, it's the lack of exposure. In the US, Captain Tsubasa didn't have the same widespread TV presence as other shows and didn't receive much marketing push. So it kinda flew under the radar.
Because the US already has 'Ted Lasso.' Kidding! But yes, an anime about soccer just doesn't resonate as strongly as homegrown sports and entertainment here in the US.
Captain Tsubasa isn't as popular in the US because soccer (or football!) isn't as deeply rooted in American culture as it is elsewhere. Kids here grew up with baseball, basketball, and football鈥攚ith a much smaller emphasis on soccer.
