They probably just wanted to mix things up and keep the game fresh, like they always do with updates!

Epic Games decided to remove ranked mode to focus on other aspects of the game and to make gameplay more balanced for everyone.

I heard it was because the ranked system was causing a lot of matchmaking issues and making some games unfair.
