Root A happened 'cause the anime team decided to tell a story that wasn't in the manga. They wanted to give the viewers a fresh perspective!
Honestly, I think Root A was just an experiment to see if people would still watch Tokyo Ghoul with a different storyline. Mixed results, I guess!
From my experience, Root A deviates to keep the tension high and the action unpredictable. It gave me a thrill ride I didn't expect!
