I think the biggest reason was the shift in gameplay mechanics. The original series focused on platforming and collecting, but The Legend of Spyro added more combat and storyline elements. Different strokes for different folks.

Having played both the classic and The Legend series, I can say that the split came mainly from a change in Spyro's personality and the overall darker storyline. It was a jarring shift for long-time fans.

Honestly, the fanbase split cuz some people just can't handle change. The Legend of Spyro brought a new take on the character, and some fans were just too nostalgic.

The Legend of Spyro split the fanbase because it drastically changed the original gameplay and tone. Fans of the classic games loved the light-hearted, colorful adventures, while The Legend series went for a darker, more serious vibe.
