Why is Charizard Not a Dragon Type?

Charizard looks like a dragon, but it's not Dragon-type because the designers wanted to balance gameplay. Plus, Game Freak likes to keep us on our toes!
Hot take: Charizard should TOTALLY be a Dragon-type. I mean, come on—it's a literal dragon in appearance!
Charizard is Fire/Flying because the developers wanted to reserve the Dragon-type for the Dratini evolution line in the original games.
As a long-time Pokémon player, I can tell you that Charizard being Fire/Flying was a way to keep the Dragon type rare and special in the early games. Trust me, it wouldn't feel the same otherwise!
