Lol, 'cause they wanted to pack it with as much awesomeness as possible! Seriously though, it's because the Chimera Ant arc is super detailed and complex. They didn't want to rush the storytelling.

I mean, would you want the Chimera Ant arc to be shorter? More episodes means more Gon, Killua, and epic battles! Can't complain about that.

Hunter x Hunter Season 5 covers the Chimera Ant arc, which is one of the longest and most intricate arcs in the series. It needed the extra episodes to do the story and characters justice.
