It's called Undertale because the entire game takes place in an underground world filled with monsters and hidden secrets. You know, the 'under' part! Also, as you explore, you'll uncover the 'tales' of the characters you meet. Clever, right?

The name Undertale comes from the fact that you're literally beneath the surface in a world with many stories to tell. It's all about the journey and the stories (or 'tales') you discover underground.

Toby Fox named it Undertale because the game is literally set underground, and it's all about the tales you unravel there. Simple as that!
