It's called Grand Theft Auto because you're literally committing grand theft auto (among other crimes) in the game. It's all about car theft, heists, and causing chaos. Pretty self-explanatory, if you ask me.

Grand Theft Auto, or GTA for short, gets its name from a term used in the U.S. legal system. 'Grand theft auto' refers to the crime of stealing a car, which is a major part of the game's theme. Players often engage in stealing cars among other criminal activities within the game's open-world environment. So, the title is a direct nod to one of its core gameplay elements!

Honestly, calling it Grand Theft Auto is spot on. You steal cars. A lot of them. It's the essence of the game. Perfect name choice.
