Sonic Forces decided to shake things up and focus more on straight-line speed and platforming challenges rather than drifting mechanics. So, even without drifting, you still get that classic hedgehog speed!

Drifting was left out in favor of simplifying controls. They wanted newcomers to zoom without the extra moves!

In my playthrough, it felt like they wanted to focus on the character customization and level design, so drifting took a backseat.
