Make sure you're using the latest version of the app. Go to your app store and see if you need to update it!
Maybe it's just having a bad day. Give it some time and try again later. Works for me most of the time.
Check your internet connection. Sometimes Messenger just needs a stronger Wi-Fi hug to work properly.
