Hunter x Hunter (1999) got cancelled because it simply caught up to the manga, leaving no more story to animate. They decided to end it rather than create filler episodes.

The 1999 series ended due to lack of source material as the manga couldn't keep up with the anime's pace.

They ran out of manga material and didn't want to add any filler arcs. Simple as that!
