Could be because you haven't confirmed your account, too many pending requests, or maybe your friend just found you, uh, unfriending!
Facebook might not let you add friends if you've reached the friend limit (5,000 friends) or if you've sent too many friend requests at once. Give it a bit of time, and try again later!
