Nope, unless you have one of those elusive original models. Otherwise, it's a no-go for PS2 discs.
I have an old 60GB PS3, and it plays my PS2 games just fine. You need one of the OG models for that!
Yes, but only certain PS3 models have backwards compatibility with PS2 games. Specifically, the original 20GB, 60GB, and some 80GB models can play PS2 discs. Later models, unfortunately, dropped this feature.
