Fallout 76 is named after Vault 76, which is the shelter the game's characters emerge from. Vault 76 is one of the Vault-Tec vaults and is located in West Virginia. The game takes place 25 years after the Great War, celebrating the 300th anniversary of America's founding in 1776. Hence, the '76 in Fallout 76 highlights the vault number and nods to America’s spirit of independence.
