If you're a stickler for manga accuracy, you'll notice the anime takes some liberties after a bit.
More or less for the first half of season one, then it politely says 'bye' to the manga storyline.
From personal experience, I found the early episodes a faithful adaptation, but it starts to deviate after a while.
The first season of Blue Exorcist sticks closely to the manga up until about episode 16. After that, it diverges into an original anime storyline.
