As a seasoned Tekken player, I can confirm: hold the back direction to block. Down-back if you expect a low attack. Simple yet effective.

Press and hold the back direction (opposite of your opponent) to block mid/high attacks, and down-back for low attacks. Easy peasy!

Just hold back on the D-pad or joystick to block mid and high attacks. For low attacks, you gotta hold down-back!
