You can't really 'check' with the host like a direct message, but you can use the chat in the game lobby to communicate!
Ask in the lobby chat. If you need something specific, just type it out and hope the host is paying attention!
Just hop into the lobby chat and type your questions! The host is usually around there before the game starts.
To check anything with the host, just type in the chat while you're in the lobby. Make sure the host sees it though!
