Actually, you can't just give any random item. Some items can make villagers pretty unhappy. I learned that the hard way when I gave someone a fish they hated. Always check their preferences first!
Just a quick note: make sure you're not holding a tool when trying to give a gift, or you might accidentally swing it at them! Not exactly the best first impression.
