In Stardew Valley, the Silo stores feed for your animals. Once you build it, you can cut grass with your scythe on your farm, and instead of disappearing, the grass turns into hay and automatically gets stored in the Silo. Check the counter on the front of the Silo to see how much hay you have. You need this hay to feed your animals in the coop and barn when they can't graze outside during winter or rainy days.

Short answer - Silo = hay storage. Chop grass with scythe, hay goes directly into Silo, bam, you're feeding your chickens even when the snow hits. Also, check the front of the Silo to see your hay stockpile. Easy peasy.

Honestly, you don't NEED a Silo immediately, but trust me, it makes life easier. Get it before winter, or your animals will give you the cold shoulder (literally) because they're hungry. Been there, done that, 0/10 would not recommend.
