I usually place the fire on the ground floor and build a chimney using the wood or stone walls. Works like a charm to keep the smoke out and the warmth in!

From personal experience, building a fire indoors in Valheim just needs some proper ventilation. Stack some stone around the fire or dig a pit in your floor. Ventilate well, and you'll stay toasty without choking on smoke.
