Valheim veteran here: pro tip, use that pickaxe on big boulders after bosses. You'll never run out of stone again.
You'll see stones scattered on the ground in the Meadows biomes. Later, get a pickaxe to mine stone from rocks and cliffs.
In the early game, pick up loose stones off the ground. As you progress, craft a pickaxe to mine larger stone deposits.
Stone? Just pick it up off the ground or make a pickaxe and mine it. Easy peasy.
