Make sure your internet connection is stable. 'Backup Failed' often pops up because of poor connectivity. Switching from WiFi to mobile data (or vice versa) sometimes fixes it instantly.
Just reinstall the game, but make sure you've synced your progress first! Sounds drastic, but it's like giving your game a fresh start. Worked for me when nothing else did.
