You can also get iron and gold from fishing treasure chests or buying them directly from the Blacksmith but mining is definitely the way to go. Nothing beats the thrill of finding your own ore!

To get iron in Stardew Valley, you'll want to head into the mines once you've got access. Floors 41-79 are your best bet for finding Iron Ore. Just whack those rocks and soon you'll be swimming in iron. For gold, you'll need to dig a bit deeper into the mines. Floors 80 and below start to offer up Gold Ore. Bring plenty of food and maybe a weapon; the deeper you go, the nastier the critters get.

Don't forget the Quarry once you unlock it through the Community Center or JojaMart. It's a chill spot to snag some iron and gold without delving too deep into the mines.

IMO, just buy it from Clint, the Blacksmith. Saves time and the mines can be a hassle.
