Make sure to upgrade your Academy and prioritize research technologies that give the most power. Using speed-ups and participating in events can also significantly increase your research power!
As someone who's been playing Evony for years, I'd say focusing on research that directly improves your troops and resource production works wonders. Don't forget to max out your Academy, too!
