To make sure Jacob bites the dust, don't let him grab the rotor arm from the lake in Chapter 3. He'll get caught in a bear trap later!
Hot take: Just don't give him any attention. Seriously, he can sort of fail his way into trouble on his own.
In my playthrough, I kept Jacob out in the storm without shelter. Let's just say nature took its course.
