Bring a good bow, plenty of arrows, and aim for the knees! Jokes aside, stay mobile to dodge the Elder's root attack and ranged vines. Fire arrows work great since he’s weak to fire. Also, set up campfires around the boss area to kite him into them for extra damage.

I took down The Elder solo by setting up burning campfires around the arena. He walked into them and took constant damage while I peppered him with fire arrows from a distance. Just keep moving to avoid his root attacks.

Get a buddy (or ten). Seriously, while you can solo The Elder, having friends makes it much easier. Keep moving, use fire arrows, and consider building a small base with walls or towers around the summoning altar for better defense.

Just use fire arrows and kiting. Simple as that. If you die, just grab your stuff and try again.
