To make hay in Stardew Valley, you need to cut down tall grass with your scythe. Make sure you've built a Silo on your farm first; otherwise, you won't actually collect the hay. Once you have a Silo, every time you cut the tall grass, it'll automatically be stored there. You can then access your hay from the Silo or from your coop or barn to feed your animals.

Real talk, I forgot to build a Silo my first year and was wondering where all my hay was going. Don't be like me. Build a Silo, THEN go on a grass-cutting spree. Your animals will thank you when winter hits and they're all snug inside with plenty of hay.

Hot take: Just let the animals graze outside, saves you from the hay making hassle. But yeah, if winter's coming or you like to keep your animals indoors, get that Silo and slash away at the grass!
