First things first, you need to get yourself a Wishbone, which you can obtain by defeating Bonemass, the third boss. This nifty little item will help you locate silver veins in the Mountain biome. Once you've got your Wishbone equipped, just wander around the mountains until you feel the vibrations and see the sparkles鈥攕tart digging! Make sure to use an iron pickaxe to actually mine the silver.
Silver can only be found in the Mountain biome. Defeat Bonemass for the Wishbone to detect it, then dig with an iron pickaxe.
Forget everything else. Get the Wishbone, go to the mountains, follow the beeps, and dig with an iron pickaxe. Done!
