To grab hay in Stardew Valley, you'll need to have built a Silo on your farm. Once you've got that, cut some grass with your Scythe, and it'll automatically go into the Silo. Then, head inside your Coop or Barn and interact with the hay hopper near the feeding bench to take hay out for your animals. Just click on the hay hopper, and you'll get a piece of hay to place on the feeding bench.
You're overthinking it. Just cut grass, have a silo, and click on the dispenser. Boom, hay.
