I've been using sprinklers for ages in Stardew Valley, and the best tip I can give you is to think about the layout beforehand. Regular sprinklers water 4 adjacent squares, Quality Sprinklers cover 8 squares around them, and Iridium Sprinklers water 24 squares in a big circle. Space them out so every square of soil gets water but you don't waste sprinklers.
Just plop it down on your farm haha. But seriously, put it on tilled soil where you plan to grow your crops. The range depends on the type of sprinkler, so plan accordingly!
