Actually, the boulder in question might also be the one blocking the entrance to the mines. For that, you just need to wait until the fifth day of Spring in your first year. It'll be removed in a small ceremony, no axe required!

Just so you know, it's not any boulder we're talking about, but the one blocking the cave in the mountains. You actually need the steel axe to break it. Can't use dynamite or anything, sadly. Just save up your resources, upgrade, and swing away!

To get rid of that pesky boulder blocking your way in Stardew Valley, you need to unlock the Steel Axe. First, upgrade your axe to Copper, then to Steel. You can do this at the Blacksmith for some gold and bars of the respective metals. Once you've got your Steel Axe, swing it at the boulder to clear the path and uncover new areas to explore!

FYI, the big glittering boulder in the river gets removed through the Community Center bundles, not an axe. Completing the fish tank bundle does the trick!
