To unlock smelting in Valheim, first defeat Eikthyr, the game's first boss. Then, use his Hard Antler to craft an Antler Pickaxe. Once you have this, mine some tin and copper, and you'll automatically get the recipes for the smelter and forge!

You need to take down Eikthyr and craft an Antler Pickaxe to start mining tin and copper. After that, you'll unlock smelting recipes. Easy peasy!
