Honestly, just focus on beating Eikthyr and mining some ore. The smelter unlocks pretty naturally after that.
You'll need to defeat the first boss, Eikthyr, to get hard antlers. Use them to craft a pickaxe and start mining copper and tin. Combine those ores in a forge to make bronze, and you'll unlock the recipe for the smelter!
First-hand experience here: Beat Eikthyr, use the antlers for a pickaxe, and go mining. It felt like opening a treasure chest when I unlocked that smelter!
