Honestly, just keep it as it is. The basic axe works fine if you're not in a rush. Upgrades? That's for people who have too many resources and nothing better to do with their gold.
To upgrade your axe in Stardew Valley, you'll need to head to the Blacksmith. Make sure you've got some copper bars and some gold (at least 2000G for the first upgrade). Drop off your axe with Clint, the Blacksmith, and after a couple of days, you'll get your tool upgraded. Just remember, you can't use the axe while it's being upgraded, so plan your woodcutting accordingly!
First, mine some copper ore and smelt it into copper bars in your furnace. With those bars and enough gold, head to the Blacksmith in town. Hand over your axe and the materials, plus the fee, and Clint will upgrade it for you. Each upgrade takes a couple of days, so plan when you won’t need your axe!
