Unfortunately, you can't upgrade swords in Stardew Valley like you do your tools (think pickaxe, axe, etc.). However, you can get stronger swords by exploring deeper into the mines, defeating monsters, or purchasing them from the Adventurer's Guild next to the mines. Keep an eye out for better swords as you progress; some of them have really cool effects!
