To use a scarecrow in Stardew Valley, first, you gotta craft one. You'll need 50 wood, 20 fiber, and 1 coal. Once you've got your materials, open your crafting menu and select the scarecrow to craft it. After crafting, place it on your farm. Scarecrows have an effective range of 8 tiles in all directions, protecting your crops from pesky crows. Make sure to space them out so there's no overlap and no crops are left unprotected!

Just put it in the middle of your crops, and it'll do its thing scaring crows away. Easy peasy.

Honestly, the trick is placing them correctly. Too far apart and crows will have a feast. Too close, and you're wasting space. Experiment a bit!

I placed my scarecrow right next to my rare crops because you can never be too careful. Lost a season's worth of starfruit to those crows once. Never again.
