Basically, Lelouch sacrifices himself and Suzaku becomes the new Zero. His death unites the world in peace, not bad for a finale!
I remember watching it when it first premiered. Lelouch's death was shocking but made perfect sense for his redemption arc.
The original ending of Code Geass shows Lelouch getting killed by Suzaku, who is disguised as Zero, in a grand act of sacrifice to create a peaceful world.
