Hardwood in Stardead Valley can be found by chopping down the large stumps and logs you come across in the Secret Woods and around your farm. Pro tip: Upgrade your axe to at least a Copper Axe to break those stumps!
Just hit up the Secret Woods and go on a stump rampage. That's pretty much it.
