From what I know, the movies called 'Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion' I, II, and III are recap movies with changes – they're not strictly canon to the original TV series. But 'Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection' is considered canon, serving as a sequel to those recap films.
From my experience, the original TV series is where it's at for the true story. The movies are great but mostly recap with some twists.
Just watch 'Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection' for the movie canon. The other movies are just recaps.
