You might have different versions of the game. Make sure both of you have the latest update.
Verify that the game mode and settings match. Classic mode and hide-and-seek mode aren't compatible across different game versions.
From my own experiences, it can also be due to full lobbies. If your friend鈥檚 game is full, you won't be able to join.
